These Two Hidden Facts About Supply Chain Will Make You Rethink Every Product You Buy

What matters more? People’s health and well-being or profit losses? Most companies would [sadly] say profit loss

Our health is seriously threatened by many of the products that we buy. This isn’t a new concept, it’s just for decades we as consumers assumed that brands had our best interest in mind. In most cases, this isn’t true. When developing a product, brands do a cost/benefit analysis of each component. Some components are tangible, such as ingredients and packaging, that directly impact profit; whereas others components are less tangible, such as sustainability, after-market waste, and disposal, which are de-prioritized.

It's not a matter of companies being evil, but rather a cognitive dissonance that is inherent to humans. This dissonance detracts us from the wrong-doing because we don't actually see it (ie "the sky hasn't turned red, so global climate change must not be real").

When we began to develop our product, we were (admittedly) unaware of just how many tangible and intangible factors are part of the greater equation. We decided to tackle all areas that compromise environmental sustainability, consumer value, and waste inefficiencies, while keeping costs low and never sacrificing convenience. The tangible component we removed first was filler ingredients.

Filler ingredients don't make the product any better, they just take up space

Filler ingredients are one way to drive down production costs as these non-essential elements are disguised to make the product appear more valuable than it actually is (16 ounces of "cleaning product" seems a lot more than the 10% that is cleaning product). Filler ingredients dilute the products value down low enough without clearly impacting product performance but enough to amp up frequency in repurchase.

The most widespread filler ingredient is water. Many cleaning brands fill their product with water and a small percentage of cleaning agents. Because the water dilutes the cleaning agent, a consumer will run out of a 16 oz spray bottle of cleaner filled with 90% water before they run out of 100% cleaning agents. Comparatively, our 14 ounces of Planet Pods cleaner lasts 200+ full spray bottles, so that our consumers can enjoy the benefits of longer-lasting cleaners. For these 200+ full spray bottles, we encourage our consumers to use one spray bottle that lasts (aluminum spray bottles are the lightest weight, very durable, and easy to keep clean).

Plastic is a really cheap and lasts forever, so why do we buy a new plastic spray bottle every time we buy more cleaning product?

Most everyday cleaners come in a plastic, disposable spray bottle. Plastic does a great job of holding liquid, hence why we need to buy a new one every time, it's imposed upon us. Many of these spray bottles aren’t recyclable due to the chemicals, and if they are, our current plastic recycling rate is so low (9%) and decreasing (due to the current international trade war) that efforts to recycle are futile. Even when a plastic is recycled, the plastic shrinks drastically, to the point where the end material is only a fraction of its original form.

"Recycling" isn't enough. We just don't have the infrastructure to handle the scale of waste in the world. When factoring all touch points of the supply chain, it becomes clear how poorly we're using our energy on our everyday products.

Here's what a product that prioritizes consumer health and well-being looks like

Our goal is to create products that are built with sustainability, convenience and cost efficiency at the forefront. We won’t take shortcuts as our belief in creating energy-efficient, green products is unwavering. With education and awareness, we believe that consumer packaged goods will need to fulfill a certain standard of sustainability, because people will demand it.

Our approach is to optimize at all corners of supply chain. Sourcing, production, shipping and waste are four major milestones we focus on optimizing for sustainability. We ask, what is absolutely necessary for the consumer? How can we pare down on waste? Where can we substitute in compostable materials? And how do we minimize the energy output?

Planet Pods is a multi-purpose, eco-conscious cleaning alternative aiming to remove plastic, chemical waste, and unneeded fillers from household cleaners. First, Planet Pods removes unnecessary filler (ie water) and toxic ingredients. Conventional cleaners primarily consist of water with some cleaning agents, and impose the need to purchase a new spray bottle every time consumers restock cleaning supply.

We enable consumers cost efficiencies in fewer repurchases, which results in reduced shipments which ultimately cut carbon emissions.

This is our first proof of concept in minimized packaging and lowered carbon emissions. We do all of this without sacrificing costs or convenience to the consumer.

The big picture

There are countless sources of carbon emissions, but there’s one thing we know for sure and that it needs to change drastically in the near-future or dire consequences can occur. We are tackling all problems from all corners, and see a bright future in revamping product creation to a system of clean energy and, subsequently, a greener planet.

The belief that businesses should play a more active role in making the world more sustainable is one that will become more and more widespread as consumers become more aware of bad business practices that can occur in the backend of supply chain. Overtime, we will begin to see this prioritized among younger demographics and should anticipate a wave of challenger brands entering the market to challenge the status quo. In the meantime, evaluate your everyday goods and evaluate products that maximize value for the consumer and planet.
